Every 9 months, Willie brings home a small group of piglets. He raises them, names them, gets to know them. His wife and twin 8 year old daughters play with them. Around month three their personalities begin to show. They become part of day-to-day life. Then, Willie takes them to the processor.
He has nightmares about this.
A regenerative local farmer, musician, and poet in Bowling Green, Kentucky, Willie believes that land needs animals to tend it, and that we must be honest with ourselves about where our food comes from. That it's his calling to nurture and raise the animals that will become food for his family and his neighbors. As the years pass, this seasonal journey does not get easier. Willie knows that just because something is hard, does not mean that you shouldn’t do it.
WILLIE + PIGS tracks the cycle of life for Willie and his pigs. It’s a beautifully honest, intimate, and heart-wrenching portrait of a man trying to do the right thing. It’s about grief, joy, and bacon.
